The New 1001 List

The new 1001 Books You Should Read Before You Die edition is out in the UK (they seem to alternate between the US and UK every two years, so this is an update to the British 2008 version). According to some friendly UK folks on Goodreads, there are only 11 new books (and one re-added one) on this list compared to the 2010 version. No one seems to have had the energy to figure out what disappeared. The fabulous news for me is that a couple books I have read this year are among these, as is my current audiobook, so I am now several books ahead on my 2012 1001 Books goal. I’m also happy to find that almost all of the books are already in my house or on my Kindle or in my Audible library. I like a list that doesn’t mean I have to change what I’m already doing. There were only 2 on the list I hadn’t heard of and hunted down yet. Not bad. So, what are they?

Books I’ve already read:
Nemesis by Philip Roth
Cain by José Saramago

The book I’m reading now:
1Q84 by Haruki Murakami

Books I already have:
The Sense of an Ending by Julian Barnes
A Visit from the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan
Freedom by Jonathan Franzen
The Marriage Plot by Jeffrey Eugenides
The History of Love by Nicole Krauss
The Art of Fielding by Chad Harbach

And the books I’d never heard of:
There but for the by Ali Smith
A Gate at the Stairs by Lorrie Moore

I guess I’ll be picking those last two up soon.

    I have read A Visit from the Goon Squad and The Marriage Plot. I am up to 327 on the combined list now. There is a list of the books that have been removed in one of the threads on Goodreads.

    I actually bought a copy of this edition. I got tired of working off the various digital lists and wanted a physical copy with all the reviews. It’s a very pretty volume!
